House Briis-sous-Forges (91)

A 14th-century keep where Anne Boleyn lived as a child and a detached house, 40 km from Paris, near the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse regional nature park. Near a church, a tall wooden gate in a crenellated stone archway leads to a keep that towers, unrivalled, over its village and surroundings. This keep is the only remnant of a medieval castle that once stood here. A drawbridge-crossed moat would have encircled the castle, which was built in the 14th century. In 1506, England’s ambassador to France entrusted one of his relatives – the village’s lord – with looking after his daughter, Anne Boleyn. The ‘little Boleyn’, as Archduchess Margaret of Austria would call her, lived in this castle until she was old enough to be presented at court. She returned to England and became a maid of honour to Mary Tudor, a sister of King Henry VIII of England. She accompanied Mary Tudor in France when the latter married King Louis XII of France in 1514. Years later, back in England, Anne married King Henry VIII. But the king soon repudiated her, claiming that she was unfaithful. Anne’s fate then made her a legend: she was beheaded on 19 May 1536. It was in this edifice that the ill-fated future wife of King Henry VIII – and mother of Queen Elizabeth I – spent her first flush of youth. Her long stay here left its mark on the property: Anne Boleyn’s name is still associated with the place today. In 1772, Guillaume de Lamoignon, the count of Montrevault, ordered a demolition of the castle, which was falling into ruins. He only kept the keep and part of the annexes and two turrets, which were later demolished in the 19th century. In 1885, the keep was restored and converted into a dwelling. An adjoining tower was added to the initial keep during this period too. This tower contains a spiral staircase that connects to the different floors. In the same century, a detached house was built beside the keep. The pair of buildings form an axis pointing south-east. The two edifices are different to each other in style, but each one has a slate roof, stone walls punctuated with windows with pane bars – in openings that are tall and rectangular in the keep and slightly arched in the detached house – and a range of stylised structural features.

Castle Viry-chatillon (91)

A 195 m² flat with its original decor and garden, in an 18th century chateau, 30 minutes south of Paris. Hidden from view, the chateau can be made out through an impressive wrought iron gate, which opens on to the main courtyard. The building features a classical architectural style and is aligned with the path of the sun. Some historical documents mention the 15th-century fiefdom that once extended over these grounds. Rebuilt in the 18th century, the chateau was acquired in the mid-19th century by Auguste Lamy and Cécile Kuhlmann. Auguste Lamy (1820-1878), physicist and chemist, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, was instrumental in the discovery of thallium. He was also a director of the Kuhlmann industrial group established by his father-in-law Charles Frédéric Kuhlmann, founder of Crédit du Nord. The property was owned by the family until 1946. The chateau reflects the pure classical style typical of the second half of the 18th century. It comprises three storeys over a cellar. On the eastern side, the building consists of a central section flanked by two wings set at right angles. The main door, accessed via a flight of stone steps with two accesses and a wrought-iron banister, completes the overall symmetry. The entrance is surrounded by three windows on either side, two of which stand proud of the wings. The first floor, illuminated by nine openings protected by wrought iron railings, is topped by a second upper level in the roofspace featuring three domed zinc roof dormers with carved wings. The hipped slate roof features ridge finials. The western facade, overlooking the grounds, follows the same layout as the one on the street side, with one exception: the addition of a central semi-circular porch topped with pear-shaped stone balusters, which opens onto a vast lawn bordered by a variety of trees. The flat is located in the southern section of the chateau and extends over the entire ground floor and part of the first floor. It comprises two sitting rooms, three bedrooms and various other rooms awaiting conversion. The parklands at the back stretch out to an oval pool featuring a statue inspired by the sculpture of ancient Greece as the focal point of its verdant plant theatre stage. The commonhold consists of four flats and the only shared areas are the landings on the different levels and the grounds.

House with terrace Quincy-sous-Sénart (91)

Located a few steps from the castle of Quincy-sous-Sénart, in a quiet, residential area, in the heart of the city and close to the forest, these two houses combined into a single residence of 196m2 on the ground are only 35 minutes from Paris Lyon station. Past the wrought iron gate, a paved and green path leads to the garden and the terrace through which you access the house. This entrance connects the two buildings: a millstone from the 1930s and a contemporary extension from 2007. A second entrance is possible on the street side by taking the paved path which runs alongside the house. The modern part of the house consists of a 30m2 living room with a ceiling height of 5m. Sophisticated elements such as the volcanic stone floor, the marble of the sink, the copper of the worktop associated with the antique furniture, give this huge kitchen open to the dining area, an 'English countryside' style. This large room is extended by large bay windows which allow an opening onto the terrace, letting in beautiful South-West light. On this same level a corridor leads to a guest bedroom with its bathroom and toilet, currently used as an office. A few steps lead to the reading room, which occasionally becomes a sleeping area. The oldest part of the house reveals the charm of the bourgeois houses of the Parisian suburbs. Built on three levels, it offers a continuation of this large living room on the ground floor, a first living room, the music room then a double living room with a fireplace. The first floor offers three bedrooms and a bathroom. The second floor consists of a large sloping platform of 35m2 on the ground: the fifth bedroom. A full basement accessible from the house, includes a laundry room, a wine cellar, a workshop, a pantry and a modular games room thanks to rolling panels which allow these approximately 70m2 to be divided into different spaces. This charming residence in its green setting, carefully decorated, bathed in light thanks to its numerous openings and its location within walking distance of the RER station, shops, schools, and the forest, will appeal to those looking for tranquility and nature.
