Castle Châteauneuf-sur-Sarthe (49)

Ref.4110 BEAUTIFUL 19th CENTURY CHATEAU IN ANJOU This delightful 19th century property and its parkland are located in the Maine Anjou countryside, forming a wonderfully homogenous estate. A remarkable example of an architectural style that was not very common at the time, the castle overlooks its surroundings and seems to be suspended above a green setting. Situated in the heart of the Angevin heritage, a land of numerous tourist opportunities, and not far from the town of Angers, this castle benefits from an ideal position both in terms of its proximity to essential amenities; it is 4 km (2.5 miles) from a charming village providing the main services and shops; and in terms of its accessibility from the motorway/railway axes serving the metropolises and professional areas of Paris, Le Mans, Angers and Nantes. Set back from all nuisances without being isolated, the absolute charm and poetry that emanates from this building will seduce those who love timeless, modernist architecture while providing them with comfort and an idyllic environment. Built on four levels of ashlar and stone rubble under slate according to the plans of the architect Adrien Dubos, who was largely inspired by the achievements of the 17th and 18th centuries, this castle is one of the very last architectural jewels of the classical style to have been built. With a surface area of approx. 1,000 sqm, it features a central three-bay forebuilding to the north-east, adorned with an imposing main building accessed by a monumental staircase and a marble staircase with tufa stone railings. To the south-west, the facade features a central polygonal body in the forefront of the dwelling, surrounded at its base by a vast terrace bordered by splendid tufa stone railings. The facades are harmoniously provided with numerous openings adorned with beautifully decorated tufa jambs, lintels and spandrels, ensuring optimal light everywhere. A slate roof adorned with pretty pedimented dormer windows and beautiful tufa fireplaces tops this property of approx. 1,000 sqm, which is distributed as follows Ground floor: Superb entrance hall decorated with marble columns followed by a gallery leading to a main living room, a small living room, a dining room, a pantry, a study, a kitchen, a small dining room and a bedroom. These rooms are adorned with beautiful decorative elements, marble fireplaces, antique parquet floors, high woodwork and moulded ceilings. First floor : A monumental solid wood staircase leads to a large landing. In one corner, a high library and its reading area, then a huge gallery leads on either side to four double bedrooms, a master suite, a single bedroom and a linen room. There are also many decorative elements, beautiful parquet floors, beautiful marble fireplaces, woodwork and ornate ceilings. Second floor : A long gallery leads to six bedrooms, a suite and a possible attic. Garden level: organised as a pleasant flat, it comprises a vast living room with an open-plan kitchen, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a boiler room, a shed, a workshop and a laundry room. The property has several outbuildings in good condition and close to the chateau as follows: A gîte housing two flats of approx. 110sqm each, well equipped and heated either by electric convector heater and wood stove, or by oil-fired boiler, (individual sanitation system). The gite building also contains an old stable and a tack room. Three annexes, workshops and sheds, one of which has been converted into a chapel. A heated swimming pool of 12m x 8m and its pool house. A garden shed used as a shelter for outdoor maintenance equipment. Beautiful romantic English-style park of about 37 acres (15hectares) decorated with majestic trees, some of which are centuries old (oak, cork oak, lime, chestnut, cedar, Douglas fir, pine, camellia, rhododendron, etc.) and numerous fruit trees (quince, apricot, pear, apple, cherry, vine, raspberry, etc.) Stabilised paths lead easily to all parts of the park and in particular to the vast 4000m² vegetable garden, entirely enclosed by walls and fed by a well that also serves other water points in the park. A second well is not functional. From any point in the park, the views of the surrounding countryside are varied and inspiring. There is no doubt that we are in an exceptional place. Castle Chinon (37)

Ref. 4109: Charming family chateau from 16th and 19th Centuries with 7,41 acres for sale. In the heart of the Loire Valley a short distance from Chinon and a local market town with all amenities less than 10km. An idyllic location to enjoy family life this property offers and all the splendour of this well-known part of France. A stronghold attested in 1045. A confession of 1523 by Loys Aymar de Sazilly to the Lord of Ile-Bouchard mentions a fortified castle whose construction could date back to the 12th century. No trace of the fortifications remains, except in the cellars; the moat was filled in shortly before the Revolution. The present dwelling dates in part from the 15th century; it is flanked on the east by a polygonal staircase tower whose door was remodelled in the 16th century. To the north-west, a pavilion, which is an old square tower, partly levelled, bears a brick watchtower added later. To the south, a wing was added in the 19th century as an extension of the dwelling. A chapel in good condition is attested in the 18th century, but nothing remains of it today. To the east, the castle's lower courtyard itself constituted a fiefdom, attested in 1502, but probably existing before then, the fiefdom of the Court. The present dwelling is built of plastered rubble stone and has two square floors. It is flanked on the north-western corner by a pavilion bearing a brick watchtower supported by three projecting brackets and covered by a conical slate roof. To the east, the polygonal stairway tower, a half-elf made of rendered rubble stone, houses a stone spiral stairway. A second stairway leads to the basement which contains a succession of cellars and vaulted masonry passages. On its north side, the dwelling has an open gable. The slate roof ends on the south side with a hipped roof. The adjoining south pavilion has a single square floor. It has a slate roof and also ends in a hipped roof. To the south-west of the park, a circular dovecote of plastered rubble has around 2,000 ashlar bolts separated by a floor at mid-height, covered by a flat tile roof. A troglodytic shelter containing a chimney with a bread oven has been dug near the castle. Located in proximity to Chinon this beautifully presented period château enjoys a commanding position overlooking the village and river valley beyond. It has been sympathetically restored with great attention to detail and today offers luxury accommodation for family and guests. It’s 7,41 acres grounds include covered pool, courtyard, gardens and paddocks with stabling for horses. 330 sqm of living space within the chateau comprising: Ground floor : fully equipped large triple aspect modern kitchen with breakfast area, billiard room with feature tuffeau walls and fireplace with quarry tiled floor, double aspect lounge with herringbone oak parquet floor and 3.5m high ceilings, an office and shower room with wc. There are three stairs leading to the first floor as well as access to the basement. Original stone spiral stairs leading from the rear entrance leading to the upper floors. First floor: divided into 2 separate parts, the first with access via metal stairs from the hallway with a large double aspect bedroom and private bathroom (bath, shower, wc, etc.). Access via the stone stairs on a half landing is a separate shower room with wc. Guest bedroom and library/reading room. Parental suite, double aspect with feature tuffeau walls and fireplace, private bathroom, dressing room (spiral stairs to office below) and access to the private roof terrace with views over the property and village and river valley beyond. Second floor : Gymnasium room. Laundry and large attic room (87sqm) ripe for restoring and converting with fantastic beams. Basement : Wine and storage caves and boiler room with external and internal access.   Within the courtyard, there is a Guest house of circa 70 sqm: Kitchen, shower room with wc, lounge with stairs to the first floor offering large double bedroom and private shower room with wc. Private enclosed garden and individual gated access. Next to the guest lodge we have the former stables, today used as a storeroom, workshop, wood store and garage with attic space above and offering the potential for further guest accommodation if required. The original impressive pigeonnaire sits opposite the chateau, 5.8m internal diameter with a wall height of 5.6 again potential to develop further as required. The covered pool measures 16m x 4m with depth from 1.1m to 1.7m. The wooden stable block provides two enclosed stables and a tack room. The estate of just over 7,41 acres includes the gated formal courtyard, gardens, an orchard area, chicken run and vegetable patch. There is a large 3,71 acres paddock enclosed for horses with a second gated entrance and a separate area with their stables. Cabinet LE NAIL – Touraine - Loire Valley – M. Castle Veauce (03)

EXCLUSIVE - LEGENDARY FORTRESS OF VEAUCE IN THE HEART OF ALLIER - MH - MORE THAN 1000 YEARS OF HISTORY(S) - ON A ROCKY Spur - SPLENDID VIEW - 8.3 HA - MONUMENT IN RISK Known to be the residence of Louis the Pious, Western emperor in the 9th century. The location of the Veauce castle has existed since the Gallo-Roman era; springs still in water dating from this period are also visible in a cellar of the castle. In the 9th century, the castle was the summer residence of Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, emperor and king of the Franks. The fortress underwent numerous periods of construction and reconstruction: in the 11th, 13th then at the end of the 15th century, beginning of the 16th century when the lordship of Veauce was established as a barony. The castle then depended on Louis II of Bourbon, on the death of the constable Charles III of Bourbon (in 1527), the lordship returned to the fold of the Crown. It was not until the 19th century that Veauce shined again with the arrival of Charles de Cadier de Veauce, an influential politician and friend of the Duke of Morny, who had the castle restored in a neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance style, he is also behind the construction of the current stables as well as the installation of a riding school in a semi-circular part of the fortress. It was also he who had the park developed by the Count of Choulot. Of the medieval fortress, what remains is the high keep, the towers and curtain walls, part of the covered walkway, as well as the kitchens. Despite its appearance as a medieval fortress, Baron de Veauce was able to modernize the place in the style of the 19th century. In the 20th century under the leadership of the penultimate owner, the castle saw the birth of the legend of Lucie, a ghost seen many times, who made the place and its owner at the time famous, Mr. Tagori 'of the Tour' (It was Eugène de Cadier de Veauce who sold the castle to Mr. Tagori in 1972). The castle is made up of four wings: An old wing on three levels and several basement levels. This building dates from the medieval period of the castle and was largely remodeled in the 19th century but still has 15th century elements, such as fireplaces and mullioned windows. The east wing is served by a circular staircase located in an hors d'oeuvre tower next to which is the castle chapel (probably a simple oratory). On the ground floor as well as on the first floor a large corridor serves all the living rooms. The noble floor located on the 1st floor. The second level, reserved for servants, has been partly redeveloped by the current owners. The basement contains the old kitchens of the medieval castle as well as a series of cellars. There is also a cistern (source?) which dates back to Gallo-Roman times. A 19th century wing fitted out in a neo-renaissance style. It is identical in layout to the old wing. It is in this part of the monument that the Duke of Morny was housed while he built the Château de Nades in Puy-de-Dôme. The other two wings, partly collapsed, are outbuildings, garages and stables built on old buildings. All of these 4 wings are surrounded by a curtain wall and fortification towers dating between the 13th and 15th centuries. Battlements and the development of a clock tower were added in the 19th century. Around the fortress there are various developments and buildings: To the east, a large terrace with stairs constituted the main access to the castle probably from the 18th century. An entrance with a lodge and large gate was built in a troubadour style in the 19th century (another lodge, known as the 'Lion Lodge', constitutes the entrance at the east end of the park). To the West, an old tower transformed into an icehouse, as well as a final entrance with a lodge and gate (known as the 'Little Lodge').
